The Pirates signed Machado to a minor league contract on Monday.
ANALYSIS
The switch-hitting shortstop hasn't played in the majors since 2005, when he split time with Colorado and Cincinnati. Machado hit .236 with two homers and 27 RBI with Toronto's Triple-A team in 2008. If he plays at all in the majors this year it will likely be due to a rash of injuries and/or trades.

Past Fantasy Outlooks
2005
2004
2003
Machado can take a walk and steal an occasional base, but he might be the rare example of a hitter who has too much plate discipline. He's competing with Felipe Lopez for the Reds starting shortstop job, following a cup of coffee with the big league club last September. Machado injured his knee playing winter ball in Venezuela and might not be ready for the start of the season.
Is it possible for a prospect to have too much plate discipline? Machado's walk-rate skyrocketed in 2003, but that was matched by a complete evaporation of his power and batting stroke. We usually emphasize the importance of plate discipline, particularly among younger players, but no amount of plate discipline will compensate for a .196 batting average. If Machado can right matters at the plate, his speed could make him a valuable fantasy asset.
Machado, 21, hit .251 with 12 homers and 77 RBI in 126 games at Class AA Reading. He also stole 40 bases (caught 11 times) and walked 72 times in 450 AB. When you bring up Machado's name, you think defense first, but his bat caught up last season. The Phillies are thinking about a Machado/Jimmy Rollins middle infield in 2004. Keep an eye on him at Class AAA Scranton this year.
