Leone played 31 games for the Mariners during last year's 2005 tryouts before his season ended with a broken hand. Although he had just 22 hits in 102 AB, 11 went for extra bases. His fielding, though, caused concern as he made nine errors. Leone has an edge on fellow third-base prospect Greg Dobbs and could make the team to back up Adrian Beltre at third as the Mariners need another bench player after letting go utilityman Jolbert Cabrera.
Leone had a breakout year for Double-A San Antonio last season. He took over for Greg Dobbs, who was injured after three games, and proceeded to hit .288 with 21 home runs and 92 RBI. Dobbs and Leone are the Mariners' top prospects at third base. If the Mariners don't fix their problems at third this season, Leone and Dobbs could be battling for the position in 2005.

All of a sudden, Leone seems like he has a chance to stick with the Padres. Brian Giles (hamstring) returned on Sunday, which increases the likelihood that outfielder Terrmel Sledge -- and not Leone -- will be sent to Triple-A Portland on Monday to clear a roster spot for newly acquired reliever Scott Williamson. Also on Sunday, San Diego general manager Kevin Towers told the team's official site that he is backing off his desire to acquire a new third baseman. He commented, "There's not a lot out there [at third base]. I think our guys can get the job done."
