2019 Fantasy Outlook
After getting some time at the major-league level for two straight years with the Rangers, Nicholas spent the entirety of last season stuck at El Paso, the Padres' Triple-A affiliate. The 30-year-old backstop performed quite capably there, posting a .291/.353/.485 line with 16 homers. Now with the Rockies, he's likely an injury or two away from getting back to the big leagues. His .252/.300/.456 line in 110 plate appearances at the highest level certainly doesn't excite, but it is enough to suggest that he could be a capable enough backup if given the opportunity. Fairly poor framing numbers in his brief time in the big leagues have likely contributed to his lack of opportunities but won't hurt fantasy owners. He's not worth an investment at draft time and is unlikely to make a significant impact, but if circumstances lead to Nicholas finding his name in the lineup on a regular basis at Coors Field, there will likely be worse options to turn to in deep leagues. ANALYSIS
The 30-year-old signed a minor-league deal with the White Sox in mid-April but elected to retire rather than fight his way back to the big leagues. He got into 37 games with the Rangers in 2016 and 2017, hitting .252/.300/.456 with four homers.

The No. 3 catcher in the Rangers' organization to open last season, Nicholas didn't earn an extended stay in the majors until the team traded Jonathan Lucroy to the Rockies in late July. From that point forward, Nicholas worked as the top understudy to Robinson Chirinos, who solidified his claim to the primary gig by turning in a career-best .866 OPS. Nicholas has showcased decent on-base skills and moderate pop throughout his minor-league career and didn't embarrass himself defensively or as a hitter during his light playing time with the Rangers in 2017. However, as a 29-year-old with only 110 MLB plate appearances under his belt, his ceiling appears fairly limited. Don't expect him to receive more than a start or two per week this season so long as Chirinos' health holds up.
Nicholas spent the bulk of the 2016 campaign with Triple-A Round Rock, although he certainly made his moments with the major league club count. Merely a week into the season, he was thrusted into action as Texas' backup catcher due to an injury to starter Robinson Chirinos. Nicholas filled the role admirably, as he bashed two home runs and four doubles en route to posting an .876 OPS in just 35 at-bats prior to be shipped back to the minors. The 28-year-old continued to mash in the minors, ripping 41 base hits while walking at a solid 8.5 percent clip, which helped him garner a return to the big leagues in September. With Jonathan Lucroy returning for one more season in Arlington, Nicholas will likely not get much time behind the plate. That being said, he has experience at first base, and given his power from the left side of the plate, Nicholas may emerge as a bench option for the Rangers.
