Efren Navarro
Efren Navarro
32-Year-Old First Baseman1B
Chicago Cubs
2018 Fantasy Outlook
Navarro was part of the Tigers' expanded roster in September, and while he carried an impressive barrel rate in a very small sample of playing time, it wasn't enough for him to keep a spot on the 40-man throughout the winter. After being outrighted to Toledo in November, Navarro refused the assignment and became a free agent. He's never slugged .400 as a part-time player at the MLB level, and turning 32 years old in May, there's little reason to think he'll change that if he's given a chance in 2018. Moreover, Navarro's best season at Triple-A came way back in 2011, when he was in the hitter-friendly Pacific Coast League and played half of his games at Salt Lake City as a member of the Angels organization. If he signs, he'll likely hang around at Triple-A as an organizational depth player, but even that opportunity isn't a guarantee for him at this point. Read Past Outlooks

Past Fantasy Outlooks
2016
2015
2012
Navarro fell into a familiar pattern in 2015, as he performed well at Triple-A Salt Lake (.329/.380./442) but was unable to translate his skills to the big league level, notching just a 66 wRC+ in 88 plate appearances. Navarro's two major strengths are batting average and on-base percentage, as he sports a healthy .300/.365/.417 slash line in nine minor league seasons, but much of that stems from a BABIP that has exceeded .380 in the each of the past three years. Navarro will enter his age-29 season with just 256 at-bats in the majors which likely means that it will take an extended absence from a lineup regular for him to see consistent playing time.
After seeing 12 at-bats combined in the major leagues during his eight years in the Angels' minor league system, Navarro saw 174 plate appearances last season, as a variety of injuries allowed him to get time in the outfield and at first base. Navarro has been a solid contributor at Triple-A Salt Lake, hitting .326 in each of the last two seasons, but he struggled in his first real exposure to major league pitching, slugging just .340 with the big club last year. Navarro showed some positives in his peripherals, as he struck out in just 15.5% of his plate appearances, while drawing 13 walks. Barring an injury, however, Navarro is unlikely to see much time in the big leagues, as his natural position is currently occupied by Albert Pujols. He will once again be used as organizational depth heading into the 2015 season.
Navarro took advantage of the hitter-friendly Pacific Coast League and hit a career-high 12 home runs last season. Though Navarro advanced a level each of the last two seasons, he will turn 26 in May and is well down the list among Angels first-base prospects. Expect him to open 2012 as the starting first baseman with Triple-A Salt Lake.
