RotoWire's Preseason Outlooks
2017
2016
2015
2013
  1. Jose Miguel Fernandez 2017 Preseason Outlook
Fernandez was one of the top players in Cuba before defecting in December 2015. However, he did not sign a contract with an MLB team in 2016 even though he was eligible and exempt from the international bonus pools. Despite a pedigree that made him the No. 3 hitter for Cuba's 2013 World Baseball Classic team, Fernandez's current skill set is uncertain. Scouts raved about his quick swing and strong plate discipline. He also had the athleticism to play second base, but he hasn't played professional baseball since October 2014 when he was suspended from Cuba's professional league for trying to defect. Fernandez was rumored to be nearing a minor league contract with the Dodgers in January but nothing was official at press time.
  2. Jose Miguel Fernandez 2016 Preseason Outlook
Fernandez had been one of the top players in Cuba and was the No. 3 hitter for Cuba's 2013 World Baseball Classic team. He hit .326/.482/.456 in the Serie Nacional, Cuba's professional league, in 2014-15, and Baseball America at the time ranked him as the No. 3 player in Cuba. Fernandez tried to leave the country in October 2014, but was caught and suspended for the rest of the 2014-15 Serie Nacional season. He was successful in his second attempt to leave Cuba in December 2015 and will try to sign with a MLB team for the 2016 season. As a 27-year-old player he will be exempt from international bonus pools. He's seen as major league ready and could be a starter at second base for a MLB team, but the long layoff from playing baseball could mean that he spends time in the minors initially.
  3. Jose Miguel Fernandez 2015 Preseason Outlook
Fernandez has been one of the top players in Cuba and was the No. 3 hitter for Cuba's 2013 World Baseball Classic team. He hit .326/.482/.456 in the Serie Nacional, Cuba's professional league, in 2014-15, and Baseball America ranked him as the No. 3 player in Cuba. He defected from Cuba in October and will try to sign with a team before the 2015 season. Fernandez could be an immediate starter at second base in the majors.
  4. Jose Miguel Fernandez 2013 Preseason Outlook
Starting 2B and No. 3 hitter on Cuba's 2013 WBC team.
