Cabrera was cut loose by the Braves on Wednesday, David O'Brien of The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports.
ANALYSIS
Cabrera hadn't appeared in a major-league game since 2016, when he tossed 38.1 innings with the Braves. Over 31 appearances with High-A Florida this season, he had logged a disastrous 11.03 ERA and 2.71 WHIP over 31 innings of relief. He will look to latch on with another organization, though it's unlikely that we will see Cabrera back on a big-league mound in 2018.

Cabrera has plenty of velocity as he is one of the hardest throwers in the game with a 100.1 mph average fastball. However, it takes more than velocity to close, which is why the 23-year-old rookie only netted six saves in 2016. He has a low strikeout rate for someone with his velocity and he walks way too many batters at this stage to be used in the late innings on a consistent basis. Atlanta just gave Jim Johnson a new two-year deal, meaning Cabrera will be afforded time to improve his command, control and pitch repertoire. A positive for Cabrera is that he has yet to allow a home run at the major league level and did not allow one in 72 innings of baseball in 2015.
Control issues and a forearm injury plagued Cabrera's 2014 season, as he issued 21 free passes in 33 innings between the Gulf Coast League and High-A Lynchburg and struggled to a 7.23 ERA in 16 appearances out of the Lynchburg bullpen after his return from the forearm issue. The 21-year-old right-hander got off to a strong start upon his promotion, with a 2.61 ERA and .189 BAA in his first three starts in the Carolina League, and he did have success against lefties (.170 BAA, 16 strikeouts in 12.2 innings at Lynchburg), lending hope to a suddenly pitching-depraved Braves system that the results will be much better with a return to full health. Cabrera figures to return to a starting role to begin 2015, but until his secondary offerings start catching up to his mid-90s fastball, there will still be those that think he eventually ends up in the bullpen full-time.
Cabrera gave up just three home runs in 131.1 innings with Low-A Rome in 2013, but he walked batters at a 4.9 BB/9 clip and uncorked 16 wild pitches. Just 20 years old, he's a ways away from making an impact in the majors, but the right-hander throws hard and could at least catch the eye of those in dynasty leagues in 2014.
