Stat Review
How does Ryan Garton compare to other relievers?
This section compares his stats with all relief pitcher seasons from the previous three seasons (minimum 30 innings)*. The bar represents the player's percentile rank. For example, if the bar is halfway across, then the player falls into the 50th percentile for that stat and it would be considered average.

* Exit Velocity, Barrels/BBE %, Balls Hit 95+ MPH %, and Spin Rate are benchmarked against 2019 data (min 30 IP). See here for more exit velocity/barrels stats plus an explanation of current limitations with that data set.
  • K/BB
    Strikeout to walk ratio.
  • K/9
    Average strikeouts per nine innings.
  • BB/9
    Average walks per nine innings.
  • HR/9
Average home runs allowed per nine innings.
  • Fastball
    Average fastball velocity.
  • ERA

  • GB/FB
Groundball to flyball ratio. The higher the number, the more likely a pitcher is to induce groundballs.
  • Left On Base
The percentage of base runners that a pitcher strands on base over the course of a season.
  • Exit Velocity
The speed of the baseball as it comes off the bat, immediately after a batter makes contact.
  • Barrels/BBE
The percentage of batted ball events resulting in a Barrel. A Barrel is a batted ball with similar exit velocity and launch angle to past ones that led to a minimum .500 batting average and 1.500 slugging percentage.
  • Spin Rate
Spin Rate is the rate of spin on a baseball after it is released. It is measured in revolutions per minute (rpm).
  • Balls Hit 95+ MPH

Past Fantasy Outlooks
2018
2017
A 1.53 ERA and 0.51 WHIP in 13 appearances over the season's final month weren't enough for Garton to maintain his spot on the Mariners' 40-man as the team outrighted him in late October. Garton struggled during his brief time with the Rays prior to the trade, but his numbers over a larger body of work at the Triple-A level were impressive (2.80 ERA, 1.18 WHIP, 61:24 K:BB in 45 innings). The right-hander doesn't throw especially hard (92.5 mph average fastball velocity), but he features two swing-and-miss secondary pitches in his cutter and curveball -- both pitches had whiff rates close to 30 percent last year. While he's now off the roster, Garton figures to get the call up at some point in 2018 when the Mariners inevitably need bullpen reinforcements. Just don't expect him to crack the back end which now includes Juan Nicasio in addition to Nick Vincent, David Phelps and Edwin Diaz.
Garton put together a solid rookie season, posting a 4.35 ERA, a pair of holds and a save over 39.1 innings after a relatively quick rise through the Rays' minor league system. He'd posted double-digit K/9 rates at three different stops over that span and minuscule HR/9 rates overall, but saw regression in both categories at the big league level. His control took a slight hit as well, as his 1.40 WHIP with the major league club represented his highest figure in that category in his professional career. Given his previous body of work, it's certainly plausible that the relatively minor downturns were simply the result of the trials and tribulations of facing big league bats for the first time, and Garton therefore still profiles as a potential seventh-inning arm if everything breaks his way.
