Dovydas Neverauskas
26-Year-Old PitcherRP
Pittsburgh Pirates AAA
2019 Fantasy Outlook
On the heels of a decent 2017 campaign, Neverauskas struggled mightily in 2018 -- at least he did in the majors. He landed an Opening Day roster spot despite a rough spring, but he spent much of the season shuttling between Triple-A Indianapolis and the majors. The results? With Pittsburgh, the Lithuanian scuffled to the tune of an 8.00 ERA and 1.48 WHIP. However, at Triple-A, he shined with a 2.53 ERA and 1.32 WHIP. He even produced his best strikeout rate with Indianapolis (11.3 K/9), though it was offset by a brutal 5.9 BB/9. Neverauskas figures to play a similar role for the Pirates in 2019, riding the shuttle and providing middle relief help in Pittsburgh as needed. Read Past Outlooks

Stat Review
How does Dovydas Neverauskas compare to other relievers?
This section compares his stats with all relief pitcher seasons from the previous three seasons (minimum 30 innings)*. The bar represents the player's percentile rank. For example, if the bar is halfway across, then the player falls into the 50th percentile for that stat and it would be considered average.

* Exit Velocity, Barrels/BBE %, Balls Hit 95+ MPH %, and Spin Rate are benchmarked against 2019 data (min 30 IP). See here for more exit velocity/barrels stats plus an explanation of current limitations with that data set.
  • K/BB
    Strikeout to walk ratio.
  • K/9

Neverauskas became the first Lithuanian to play in the major leagues when the Pirates called him up in April, and he proceeded to throw 25.1 fairly effective innings across five separate stints with the team. He posted a 3.91 ERA, though his FIP was over a run higher at 4.93, suggesting that he got a bit lucky. Neverauskas ran a roughly average walk rate (7.6 percent) and groundball rate (42.9 percent), though his rather low strikeout rate (16.2 percent) will limit his ceiling as a reliever. Still, he looks to be a major-league quality pitcher and should find himself pitching lower-leverage innings for the Pirates again this season. His fantasy value will be limited in most formats.
When the Pirates promoted Neverauskas, 24, from Triple-A to join the big-league bullpen in late April, he made history as the first Lithuania-born player to play in the majors (there have been others who ethnically identify as Lithuanian, but were not born there). He looks like he has the stuff to become known for more than just his birthplace, as he sat at 97 mph with his fastball and touched 98 in his debut. Neverauskas also throws a hard slider that sits in the 90-91 mph range. His minor-league strikeout rates are not very impressive, save for a 28-inning run at Double-A in 2016 where he missed bats at a 30.5 percent clip. This points to a low-leverage role for the foreseeable future, but he has the velocity to earn a more prominent role if he can limit walks and miss more bats with his breaking ball.
