The 2006 season ended prematurely for Sturtze, who suffered a torn rotator cuff in May after making just 18 apperances in pinstripes as a reliever. He'll attempt to make his return in the National League, where his career began with the Cubs back in 1995. If he sticks with the Braves, he'll work in a middle-relief role for Atlanta.
Sturtze was solid through most of the first half, but fell off the map after the break, putting up a 6.25 ERA after July 1. He should hang onto at least a share of the seventh-inning role and may vulture a few wins, but he's probably no longer a candidate for spot starts. There are stronger middle relievers available.
Sturtze went from being a joke in the New York press ("The Yankees traded for who?") to becoming a reliable member of Joe Torre's bullpen down the stretch. With a good spring, he could establish himself with a chance for wins from spot starts and middle relief.
Sturtze threw 90 ghastly innings in 2003; his main fantasy contribution was struggling enough to the point where Kelvim Escobar was moved back into the rotation.
