Once a lightly regarded White Sox prospect Diaz slinks back to North America after a bad season in Japan, posting a 4.91 ERA and 22:16 K:BB ratio in eight starts for the Ham Fighters. He'll head into spring training just hoping he can find a role in the Nationals' threadbare pitching staff.
Diaz came down with arm trouble early and never seemed to recover, as his Triple-A numbers attest. His future is probably in the bullpen at this point if he can bounce back, but his track record is solid enough that some team should be willing to give Diaz a chance if the White Sox won't -- even if that team plays in Japan.
Diaz had a Quadruple-A sort of season in 2004 -- much too good for Charlotte, but overmatched in Chicago. He should start correcting the latter situation this season, if the Sox give him a chance.
Splitting time between the Triple-A bullpen and rotation, Diaz posted a solid 83/33 K/BB ratio in 115 2/3 innings, although fewer hits (122) would have been nice. He'll likely get his first taste of the big leagues with the White Sox in 2004, but his future role is still undetermined.
Of all the kids picked up in Kenny Williams' deadline giveaways... er, trades, Diaz is probably the best. He pitched well after he came over from the Giants, but will never rank as a top prospect until he's able to last more than five innings per start. At 22 he's still got a couple of years to build up his stamina before being banished to the bullpen.
