The Final Boss wasn't exactly Mike Tyson in "Punch-out" in his second season stateside. Oh was excellent in 2016 and looked like an upper-tier closer option heading into the 2017 campaign, but he struggled on and off throughout the first half and was ultimately removed from the ninth-inning role for good in July. A decline in the quality of his slider was the biggest issue; he lost depth and movement on the breaking pitch, and opposing batters teed off on the offering to the tune of a .284 average and .463 slugging percentage, up from .164 and .246, respectively (according to Brooks Baseball). The 35-year-old signed with the Rangers, a team which lacks established arms at the back of the pen, so he has a path back to the closer role if he's able to return to 2016 form. Given how far he fell off last season, however, he looks more likely to end up as a middle reliever in a hitter's park, leaving him with little fantasy relevance in most formats.

  2. Seung Hwan Oh 2017 Preseason Outlook
Heading into the 2016 campaign, Oh was a 33-year-old rookie and St. Louis' oldest reliever. He'd been a fantastic player in Korea, but there were still questions about how his game would translate to the MLB. It didn't take long for Oh to put any doubts to rest, as he held a 1.59 ERA and .159 opponent batting average heading into the All-Star break. By the end of the year, Oh stood as the fantasy darling of the Cardinals' bullpen and had put together a 1.92 ERA, 0.92 WHIP, and 32.9 percent strikeout rate while walking less than six percent of the batters he faced. With a fastball that averages 92.8 mph, Oh doesn't overwhelm batters with power and frequently relies on his slider, which he uses over 31 percent of the time. Looking at 2017, Oh will begin the season as the Cards' closer and likely command a top-10 closer price at the draft table.
  3. Seung Hwan Oh 2016 Preseason Outlook
Oh has been a dominant reliever in Korea and Japan for the past decade, racking up 357 saves in 11 seasons between professional leagues in both countries. At age 33, with nothing left to prove as a closer in Asia, Oh signed a one-year deal with the Cardinals. There are questions as to whether his strikeout rate (above a batter per inning in his career) will hold up with the move to North America, but his long-term success overseas in a prominent late-inning role should offer the Cards some flexibility if Trevor Rosenthal succumbs to injury or a prolonged period of struggles as the team's preferred ninth-inning option. Unless one of those two scenarios opens the door for Oh to close in St. Louis, his value may be limited to leagues that reward holds.
