Musser signed a minor-league contract with the Astros on Thursday, the team's official site reports.

ANALYSIS
The Royals' had designated Musser for assignment earlier this spring. Musser spent 2008 going between Kansas City and Triple-A Omaha. He'll provide some more bullpen depth for Houston in 2009.

Musser was limited to just one major league appearance in 2008, and spent the rest of the season with Triple-A Omaha. He did not even approach his 2007 dominance, but he actually struck out more than a batter an inning in 2008 (64 K in 56 innings). However, he also allowed a lot of walks (37) and that is something that has plagued him his whole career. He will have an opportunity to win a bullpen spot in spring training, and figures to head to Omaha should he fail.

Musser was lights out at Triple-A Omaha in 2007, posting a 0.49 ERA and .173 BAA in 55.1 relief innings, and had a 42.2-inning streak of not allowing an earned run. However, his transition to the major leagues was not as easy, but put up a 4.38 ERA in 17 appearances. He'll be a lefty out of the bullpen for the Royals, but very low in the closer pipeline.

Musser had two nice outings for Triple-A Omaha late in 2006 and was protected from the Rule 5 draft, but a quadruple-A career for this 27-year-old lefty would exceed most expectations.
