Daubach is the kind of guy Boston likes to stash at Triple-A Pawtucket for use only in case of an emergency. At this point, Daubach seems to be accepting of that as his baseball fate, but could push for a spot on the major league roster as a fifth outfielder. Gabe Kapler is heading to Japan and there's a need for another outfielder -- especially one that can platoon with Trot Nixon in right field. However, Daubach is a left-handed batter, and would not be a candidate for a platoon with the lefty Nixon. We expect Boston to sign some free agent talent in the offseason and are likely looking for a more athletic player than Daubach to fill out the roster.
Daubach saw little action in 2003, despite Paul Konerko's struggles, but considering how little he did when given the chance that's not surprising. Daubach's not good enough to be a big league starter, but he doesn't seem to have the temperament to be a bench player either. When his current contract with the Red Sox runs out, Japan might be his best bet.
Daubach, 31, has been extremely consistent the past four seasons, averaging 21 HR and 75 RBI in 430 at-bats. When given 400-450 at-bats, Daubach is at his best. Is that enough for his $2.3 million salary? Probably not for Boston. He's a very streaky hitter who can play first, outfield and DH. The Sox traded for Jeremy Giambi, which could spell the end to Daubach's career with Boston.
