Nunez was ecstatic to come over from Florida in a deal for Rudy Seanez. Finally given a chance to play every day, Nunez responded with a strong August – hitting .287 with four home runs and a .792 OPS. He crashed in September, though, hitting .183 and finishing the year in a 0-for-15 slump. Barring a free-agent signing or trade, Nunez enters the spring with the best chance to start in right field. The Royals hope it will be a competitive battle, though, and are not going to hand it to him.
Nunez missed his chance to break camp as the fourth outfielder, and maybe missed his chance to win the left field job when Todd Hollandsworth faltered. The Marlins are now chock-full-of corner outfielders, so whatever window might have been open has now decisively closed -- he's by no means a top prospect anymore, but he could still use a change of venue.
Once upon a time Nunez was the Marlins centerfielder of the future, a youngster with five-tool talent who hadn't quite put it all together. One visa check later and he became just another 25-year old struggling to hit .250 at Triple-A. His power-speed-rifle arm combo will get him a fourth outfielder job, maybe as soon as this year, but it's hard to see him accomplishing a whole lot more in the majors.
