Past Fantasy Outlooks
2006

2003
Piedra was one of the best pinch hitters in baseball last year, hitting .455 with eight RBI in 33 at-bats. Naturally a centerfielder, he doesn't have the range for Coors Field. He'll be the Rockies' fourth outfielder this year and likely see more at bats than in 2005.
Piedra has power to the gaps and hit at the highest clip of his pro career at Triple-A Colorado Springs in 2004. With the Rockies losing Jeromy Burnitz to free agency and looking to move Preston Wilson, Piedra could get a significant look in the majors in 2005, but only merits a fantasy pickup if he can earn a starting role out of spring training.
Piedra looked like he was well on his way to the majors after the 2000 season. Then came West Tennessee. Upon his arrival at the Cubs' Double-A affiliate, Piedra inexplicable lost his ability to make consistent contact. The Cubs then sent him packing and the Rockies happily scooped him up. If you throw out the numbers he put up for the Jaxx over a season and a half, Piedra is a .300 hitter in the minors. He was placed on the Rockies' 40-man in the off-season and could get a call-up if injuries or ineptitude on the big league club rear their ugly heads this summer.
