2003
DeVore is a fourth outfielder prospect who is probably a better player than the Giants' own draftees (Linden, Ellison, Niekro, et al). He'll have little fantasy value until and unless he stumbles into an organization that lets him play.
DeVore is the type of guy who plays a corner outfield spot for a team that loses 111 games. Arizona outrighted him in the offseason (that's his fourth time in 13 months) but re-signed him to a minor league contract (ditto). He'll provide organizational depth and likely get limited major-league at-bats in 2005.
Devore's numbers improved in his second year at Triple-A in 2003, but not enough to keep his spot on Arizona's 40-man roster, which doesn't sound good when you consider how few outfield prospects the D-Backs have. He turned 26 in the winter, and you wonder if he's plateaued already. If you were hanging on to Devore in a keeper league, there are better prospects available.
Devore hit .261-14-59 in 125 games at Triple-A in 2002. He might have a crack at a fourth or fifth outfielder spot with the Diamondbacks, depending on how he looks in the spring. However, he struck out 103 times at Triple-A last year against just 27 walks, so we're not sure we can rate him too highly without another year of development in the minors.
