RotoWire's Preseason Outlooks

2017-18

Subscribe now to see our 2017-18 outlook.

2015-16

In his second season in New Orleans, Babbitt played in a career-high 63 games, averaging 13 minutes per contest. The 6-foot-9 forward collected averages of 4.1 points and 1.8 rebounds with 59 three-pointers made. Babbitt is something of a one-trick pony for the Pelicans, but he excelled at his one trick. Babbitt led the NBA with a 51-percent clip from beyond the arc—the only player to shoot better than 50 percent last season. His productivity from distance was enough to earn the six-year man out of Nevada a new two-year deal this offseason. New head coach Alvin Gentry helped pilot the NBA's best three-point shooting team in the Golden State Warriors a year ago, which could mean there will be an opportunity for Babbitt this season. On the wing, he'll be behind Quincy Pondexter and perhaps Dante Cunningham for bench minutes, but at 6-foot-9, he has some stretch-four potential should Ryan Anderson be plagued by injury again this season.

2014-15

Babbitt is back with the Pelicans for his fifth season in the league after signing with the team in February of last year. The former Trail Blazer got semi-consistent playing time in New Orleans last season due to the team's numerous injuries, averaging 6.3 points, 3.3 rebounds, 1.1 assists, 0.3 steals, and 0.4 blocks in 17 minutes per game. Babbitt doesn't offer a lot beyond his outside shooting. He shot 38 percent from beyond the arc and is a career 37 percent shooter from long range. A healthy Ryan Anderson should limit Babbitt's upside, as Anderson is one of the league's premiere stretch-fours, but if Anderson should have a slow recovery from back surgery, Babbitt could have a chance to step into the stretch-four role. Albeit in a very small sample size, Babbitt excelled in extended minutes last year. In two starts, the forward averaged 31 minutes per game, scoring 17.5 points with 4.5 rebounds and 3.5 three-pointers made. He has an uphill battle to secure minutes, but given the fragility of the Pelicans' roster last season, an opening arising for Babbitt is not out of the question.

2012-13

His status as a veritable assassin from downtown keeps Babbitt employed after knocking down at least one three-pointer in 17 of Portland’s final 18 games last season, when he knocked down 1.9 treys en route to 8.7 points in 22.4 minutes per game. He’ll find minutes difficult to garner unless the team is ravaged by injuries, so don’t expect much output from the third-year forward.

2011-12

In 2010-11, Babbitt had a rather forgettable start to his NBA career - 27.3% shooting from the field, 18.8% from beyond the arc, and 33.3% from the free-throw line. He sits behind Wallace and Batum on the depth chart at small forward, though Babbitt could see playing time as a stretch four in some lineups. If he can regain the shooting touch that made him a first-round pick, the second-year player could be valuable in extremely deep leagues with offerings of three-pointers and rebounds.

2010-11

Babbitt was selected 16th overall by the Timberwolves but traded to the Trail Blazers for Martell Webster on draft night. His long-term upside is good, but his short-term fantasy value is limited by a lack of available minutes in the Blazer rotation.
