Past Fantasy Outlooks
Delaney, an undrafted free agent out of Virginia Tech, was able to make the Hawks roster out of camp and regularly served as a depth option at point guard, battling with Jose Calderon for minutes off the bench. He finished his rookie season averaging 5.4 points, 1.7 rebounds and 2.6 assists across 17.1 minutes, although he struggled to show any semblance of a three-point shot with a 23.6 percent clip from deep. While the Hawks essentially cleared house of all the big names, including Paul Millsap, Dwight Howard and Tim Hardaway Jr., Dennis Schroder is still on the team and will remain the starting point guard, so Delaney shouldn't see much of an increase in his role. He figures to open the year as Schroder's backup with Calderon no longer around, which could result in a few more minutes from last season. However, unless an injury occurs to Schroder, that should keep Delaney as a non-factor in Fantasy leagues.
Since turning pro in 2011 after going undrafted out of Virginia Tech, Delaney has been on an odyssey across Europe, playing for clubs in France, Ukraine, Germany and Russia. It was in his last stop with Russian club PBC Lokomotiv-Kuban where Delaney's play finally captured the attention of NBA teams, as the 27-year-old impressed Euroleague scouts with his ball-handling, three-point shooting and ability to run an offense. He was able to parlay those skills into a two-year, fully guaranteed contract with the Hawks, who likely view him as their third point guard behind Dennis Schroder and Jarrett Jack. That sort of role would presumably keep Delaney falling out of the rotation most nights, but with Jack set to turn 33 years old before the season and coming off a torn ACL, Delaney represents an important insurance option at the position.
