Falls out of contention for starting job
August 14, 2018
Cincinnati offensive coordinator Mike Denbrock suggested Monday that Bryant is no longer viewed as a candidate for the starting quarterback gig, Justin Williams of The Athletic reports. "I would say it's tipping toward a two-man race [between senior Hayden Moore and redshirt freshman Desmond Ridder] a little bit more than at the beginning of camp," Denbrock said. "I think Ben is still unfortunately in the learning process a lot more than those other two guys are, with them having been here a little longer."
Moore and Ridder shared all of the snaps for the first-team offense Monday, which seemingly supports the idea that Bryant, a true freshman, is the No. 3 option on the depth chart. Though Bryant was given a chance to compete for the top spot, it was always likely to be an uphill battle for him to unseat the incumbent starter in Moore or beat out Ridder, who has a full year in the program already under his belt. Unless Ridder fares well this season and emerges as the clear-cut starter heading into 2019, Moore should have another opportunity to build his case for the top job next spring and summer.
