Training Camp Notes: August 22

This article is part of our Training Camp Notes series.

To start out today's training camp news, a few players returned to practice after missing time, though none of these players should have their fantasy rankings altered due to the missed time. These players include Nick Chubb (concussion), Davante Adams (foot/ankle) and Ryan Fitzpatrick (personal).

·        Although the injury has been reported as minor, Jack Doyle has now missed four practices in a row, and newly acquired Trey Burton has been impressing the coaching staff with his receiving skills in the meantime. For now, Doyle remains a volume-based fantasy option, who's very reasonably priced as the TE20 in drafts, but if Burton steals away passing down work, that could curtail much of Doyle's potential upside.

·        After early camp reports had Justin Jackson primed for the No. 2 spot behind Austin Ekeler, rookie Joshua Kelley went from seeing third-team reps early in the week to first-team reps by the end of it. As the only one of the top-three RBs on the Chargers' roster over 200 pounds, Kelley could seize a significant role that could include work near the goal line. With an ADP of RB58, he could be a great pick late in drafts for teams in need of RB depth along with a degree of upside.

·        In a fantasy landscape in which there's usually no such thing as a sleeper, it's possible that we may have one emerging from the Chargers. After playing in two games and seeing three passes thrown his way in 2019, Jalen Guyton saw most of the first-team reps in practice today, and aside from Mike Williams and Keenan Allen, the No. 3 receiver role is wide open. With Guyton possessing 4.35 speed, should he win the job, he could be worth a late-round flier.

·        Dede Westbrook missed practice due to a shoulder injury, but as long as the injury doesn't linger toward the end of the month, he can continue being a decent flier outside the top-180 picks in drafts with the hope that Gardner Minshew takes a step forward, and Westbrook seizes a regular role in the passing attack. Westbrook's only a year removed from posting 815 combined yards and eight TDs, so he has potential to function as at least a flex option if things break for him.

·        There's certainly very little fantasy buzz around J.D. McKissic, but for a player going outside of the top-300 players (many leagues don't draft nearly that many players), he's been working out of the slot in practices along with some of the work he's seen with the running backs. Given the fact he was signed to a two-year deal with a signing bonus and guaranteed money, it's very likely he makes the team, and with a pair of 34-reception seasons to his credit, he could offer late round PPR appeal in the deepest of leagues.

·        IDP players need to be aware that Earl Thomas was sent home by the Ravens, and Mike Garofolo of NFL Network is reporting that Thomas could be released or traded after an incident with teammate Chuck Clark. Should Thomas resurface on another team, his IDP ranking should remain as it currently is, but should he be released and if he doesn't sign somewhere else quickly, he may not be in line to play in Week 1.
