Yahoo DFS Hockey: Thursday Picks

This article is part of our Yahoo DFS Hockey series.

GOALIE

Thomas Greiss, NYI vs. NYR ($35): Will Greiss hold onto his 1.98 GAA and .938 save percentage forever? The odds are highly against it, but he's been empirically great to start the season. On the other hand, the Rangers have scuffled offensively. The Blueshirts have only scored 2.67 goals per game, and they've only put 29.6 shots on net per contest as well.

GOALIE TO AVOID

Roberto Luongo, FLA at CLM ($34): Luongo has been even better than Thomas Greiss, somehow, but his 1.33 GAA and .956 save percentage come in only five games. Those numbers are definitely unsustainable, especially for a 39-year-old. Additionally, the Panthers are on the road, and the Blue Jackets have averaged 3.22 goals and 33.0 shots on net per game.

CENTER

Matt Duchene, OTT vs. DET ($18): Duchene doesn't have a lot of talent around him, but he's still putting up numbers (if only to try and secure another trade). The 27-year-old has 19 points in 18 games. Detroit, on the other hand, has a 3.33 GAA and have given up a whopping 35.2 shots on net per contest.

CENTER TO AVOID

Nazem Kadri, TOR at SAN ($17): With Auston Matthews out, Kadri's role has increased, and he has nine points in his last nine games. However, he has an 18.4 shooting percentage, which would be the highest of his career, and six of his 13 points have come on the power play. In addition to only allowing 28.6 shots on goal per contest, the Sharks have the second-ranked penalty kill.

WING

Matthew Tkachuk, CGY vs. MON ($22): Tkachuk has started 59.5 percent of his shifts in the offensive zone, and it's paid off for the Flames. He's tallied 19 points in 18 games, including six on the power play. The Canadiens have a 3.39 GAA, and a healthy Carey Price has not really helped out. They have a .888 save percentage as a team.

Brendan Gallagher, MON at CGY ($17): Let's flip around and recommend a Canadien as well. Gallagher scored 31 goals on 278 shots last season, and he already has nine goals on 60 shots in 18 games. He's also averaged 3:57 per game on the power play. The Flames have the 24th-ranked penalty kill, so that time with the extra man could pay off.

WINGS TO AVOID

Artemi Panarin, CLM vs. FLA ($28): Panarin has three points in his last eight games, but none of them are goals. In fact, in his last 14 games he only has two goals. I don't believe Roberto Luongo can keep up his current level of play, but he has been great (1.33 GAA, .956 save percentage) so given Panarin's price he still feels risky.

Phil Kessel, PIT vs. TAM ($27): It's been business as usual for Kessel, although his 17.0 shooting percentage would be the highest of his career. However, this is a tough matchup for anybody. Andrei Vasilevskiy has a 2.30 GAA and .927 save percentage, and the Lightning rank third on the penalty kill. Given how much Kessel has relied on power-play performance in his career, that doesn't bode well.

DEFENSE

Shayne Gostisbehere, PHI vs. NJD ($20): Gostisbehere is coming off a season where he had 65 points, including a whopping 33 on the power play. He's got nine points in 18 games this year, including five on the power play. The 25-year-old has also put 50 shots on net. Meanwhile, the Devils have a 3.50 GAA, third highest in the NHL.

Dennis Cholowski, DET at OTT ($15): The Wings don't have a ton of talent on defense, but the rookie Cholowski has nine points in 16 games, including six on the power play. A player doesn't necessarily have to be good to rack up numbers against the Senators, though. Ottawa has a 4.22 GAA, highest in the league by a wide margin, and the league's worst penalty kill to boot.

DEFENSE TO AVOID

Victor Hedman, TAM at PIT ($24): Hedman's season has been hindered by injuries, but he still has three goals in 11 games thanks to a career-high 11.5 shooting percentage that will likely regress. The Penguins' overall numbers aren't great, but that's primarily on Matt Murray. It seems like Pittsburgh has turned things over to Casey DeSmith in net, and he has a 2.04 GAA and .938 save percentage. Plus, even with Murray's woes included, the Penguins have the sixth-best penalty kill.

Sami Vatanen, NJD at PHI ($16): Vatanen has only one points in his last six games, and only one goal in total on the season. You may look at the Flyers' numbers and think of this as a great matchup, but Brian Elliott has picked up his play considerably recently. Over his last six games he has a 1.44 GAA and .948 save percentage.
