Closer Watch

Chicago (AL) - Manager Robin Ventura made the curious choice to bring out Matt Thornton rather than Addison Reed for Thursday's save decision, and ended up paying for it. Thornton allowed two batters to reach base before summoning Reed into the game. Reed promptly gave up a walk-off three-run homer to Cody Ross, giving the Red Sox a 3-1 win. Reed should be secure as the White Sox closer, but Ventura may be more careful about bringing him into the game in the future when runners are already on base.

Houston - The Astros made a little noise Friday by completing a 10-player trade with the Blue Jays, acquiring reliever Francisco Cordero while shipping out bullpen arms Brandon Lyon and David Carpenter, two players who were thought to contend for closer duties going into spring training. The team ultimately elected to go with Brett Myers, who has served as the closer all season and will continue to do so even after the team acquired Cordero. Still, the move for Cordero, who has 329 career saves to his name, gives the Astros a potential fill-in should the team decide to move Myers before the trade deadline, which has been discussed all season. Keep tabs on the situation, as Cordero should get the first crack at save opportunities if Myers is dealt, though the younger Wilton Lopez could ultimately be groomed into the role.

Oakland - Cook surrendered a solo homer in the ninth inning to Nick Swisher but was otherwise unscathed in a 4-3 win over the Yankees on Thursday. The All-Star retired the next two batters to seal his tenth save on the season.

Toronto - The Blue Jays received Brandon Lyon and David Carpenter in a trade with the Astros on Friday, but both are unlikely to challenge Casey Janssen for the closer's role. With a 2.21 ERA and 13 saves to his name, Janssen has filled in admirably for the injured Sergio Santos and should have a long leash if struggles crop up. Santos (shoulder) was recently ruled out for the season, so fantasy owners in yearly leagues should feel comfortable dropping him. As a result, Janssen should remain the closer for the rest of the season, while Lyon will slide into a middle relief role and Carpenter will try to get back on track at Triple-A Las Vegas.

Recommended Pickup

Jeremy Guthrie, SP, KC - If ever there were a poster boy for the damage Coors Field can wreak on a pitcher's statistics, it would be Guthrie. Though a quick glance at Guthrie's overall numbers (3-9, 6.35 ERA, 1.69 WHIP, .324 batting average against) suggest he has been downright atrocious with the Rockies this season, Guthrie may have the most dramatic home and road splits of any pitcher in baseball. Among pitchers who have thrown at least 40 innings at home this season, Guthrie ranks dead last with a home ERA of 9.50; the next highest is the Orioles' Jake Arietta, whose home ERA is nearly three runs lower (6.63). Amazingly, Guthrie has an ERA almost six runs lower (3.67) in 49.1 innings on the road this season, which is more in line with what we saw with his overall numbers in Baltimore the past five seasons, when he recorded an ERA of less than 4.00 on three occasions. Guthrie was traded to the Royals on Friday for Jonathan Sanchez, and to say that he'll benefit from a change of scenery will be an understatement. By upgrading from the thin air of Coors Field to the much more neutral Kauffman Stadium, Guthrie should begin to resemble the pitcher the Rockies thought they acquired in their offseason trade with the Orioles. Don't expect anything overly spectacular, as he doesn't strike out many batters and will probably earn more losses than wins, but Guthrie will be particularly serviceable in AL-only leagues. By the season's end, he could ultimately prove to be the Royals' top starting pitcher given that the team's appointed "aces," Bruce Chen and Luke Hochevar, both have ERAs over 5.00.
