Stat Review
How does Buddy Boshers compare to other relievers?
This section compares his stats with all relief pitcher seasons from the previous three seasons (minimum 30 innings)*. The bar represents the player's percentile rank. For example, if the bar is halfway across, then the player falls into the 50th percentile for that stat and it would be considered average.

* Exit Velocity, Barrels/BBE %, Balls Hit 95+ MPH %, and Spin Rate are benchmarked against 2019 data (min 30 IP). See here for more exit velocity/barrels stats plus an explanation of current limitations with that data set.
  • K/BB

Past Fantasy Outlooks
2017
2014
Boshers has been a minor league journeyman with high strikeout rates and shaky control, but may have finally turned the corner with Minnesota. He had a 1.04 ERA with a 10.0 K/9 at Triple-A and then a 9.3 K/9 with a 4.25 ERA, but a 2.89 FIP, in the majors. He cut his walk rate to just 1.8 BB/9 compared to a 3.7 BB/9 career rate in the minors. His improved control could be an anomaly as 36 big league innings is a small sample size. If the trend is real, he could be a productive arm in Minnesota's bullpen.
Boshers was called up in August, after Howie Kendrick hit the disabled list with a hyperextended knee, and stayed with the big club for the rest of the season in what was likely an effort to stabilize the Angels' bullpen. Unfortunately, the young left-hander was unable to replicate the gaudy strikeout rates he posted in the minors in 2012 and 2013, and his pedestrian 7.6 K/9, combined with 4.7 BB/9, resulted in a 4.70 ERA in 15.1 innings of big league relief. As a left-handed reliever with strikeout potential in a struggling bullpen, it is possible that Boshers starts 2014 in the majors, but if he can't find the stuff that led him to post an 11.9 K/9 in 19.2 innings at Triple-A Salt Lake last season, he'll likely be resigned to the role of a specialist.
