Powers announced on Instagram that he intends to retire.

ANALYSIS
A 2009 third-round selection, Powers started 88 of his 100 career regular-season appearances, including six of his 13 games with the Ravens last season. He did miss three or more contests in six of his eight seasons, which likely contributed to his decision to retire at the age of 29. He dealt with a groin injury and a concussion last season, and he was often picked on by opposing quarterbacks. Currently an unrestricted free agent, Powers likely would draw some interest if he changed his mind about retirement, though he might have to settle for an opportunity to compete for the third or fourth spot on a depth chart.

Entering his eighth NFL season, Powers is competing with Kyle Arrington for the nickel corner position in Baltimore. Powers has been a consistent player when healthy over the course of his career, but he’s played a full 16 games just twice in seven seasons, missing a combined 25 games in that span. If he can remain healthy he’ll be a quality contributor as a third or fourth string defensive back.

After operating as the Cardinals' slot corner in 2014, Powers is expected to slip into the starting spot vacated by Antonio Cromartie. In two complete campaigns in the Arizona desert, Powers has totaled 118 tackles (108 solo), 28 passes defended, four interceptions, two forced fumbles, and one sack. While his weekly snap count will likely remain the same, the six-year pro could experience an uptick in targets faced working opposite Patrick Peterson.

Powers returns as Indy's top cornerback and is really the only experienced cornerback in the secondary. He'll need to show he's healthy after missing four games due to an elbow injury that ended his 2011 season. Powers' fantasy value is uncertain this season as his previous IDP value came as a strong tackler in Indy's former Tampa-2 scheme that required cornerbacks to be strong tacklers. With the switch to the 3-4 defense, Powers may see his tackle totals fall and it's not clear he has the cover skills to be a star.

Powers was basically identical to two other Indianapolis corners – Kelvin Hayden (who's since left in free agency) and Jacob Lacey. All three averaged between four and five tackles per game, and all three tend to get hurt fairly often (the trio combined to miss 27 games the last three years). Because of the durability concerns, all three are risky fantasy selections, but they generally go late enough to be worth the risk. Powers look set to start at one cornerback spot, so he should produce strong tackle totals in Indhy's Cover-2 scheme.

Started 12 games as a rookie, recording 63 tackles and one interception. Will be the starting right corner this season.

The rookie out of Auburn was a big time player in college, but should not have a huge impact on defense in the 2009 season as a third-string left cornerback. He may get some playing time on special teams with the idea that he will play on defense in 2010.
