Knee - MCL
March 1, 2007
The Saints have released Conwell (knee), who played in seven games last season before being placed on injured reserve.
ANALYSIS
There's probably not a huge market for the 34-year-old tight end, so his best hope will be to catch on elsewhere as a depth guy, health permitting.

Conwell suffered through a variety of knee and back injuries in 2005 and was only able to play eight games as a result. During his absence, Zach Hilton emerged as the Saints' go-to tight end, catching 30 passes over the team's final seven games. Conwell had surgery on his injured knee in November and is still not fully recovered as training camp begins. Head coach Sean Payton stated that Conwell will have to prove himself during camp in order to keep his starting job, and though Conwell is still listed at No. 1 on the depth chart, Hilton represents the team's future at tight end and has more fantasy value than Conwell.
Conwell will only catch 10-15 balls all year but he can certainly block and that`s why he starts.
Once upon a time, Conwell was a decent fantasy factor. He was one of Kurt Warner’s favorite targets in St. Louis and was expected to be Aaron Brooks’ go-to man in New Orleans. However, with the emergence of Boo Williams, Conwell will be relegated to backup duty in 2004 and won’t come close to reproducing his numbers in the past. His best year was in 2001-02, where he saw 38 passes go his way for 431 yards and 4 touchdowns.
Conwell signed a five-year deal to join the Saints after two moderately successful seasons with the Rams in which he gained 850 yards and scored six touchdowns. Unfortunately, tight ends caught just 27 of the team's 291 completions (9 percent) with Joe Horn, Donte Stallworth and Deuce McAllister getting the majority of the remaining touches. In addition, Conwell will compete with David Sloan and Boo Williams for playing time. He'll need to find the end zone more often to have real fantasy value with New Orleans.
