Jameel McClain: (Neck) Could Miss Extended Time
LBNew York Giants
Neck
August 6, 2015
McClain could miss an extended amount of time after suffering a stinger in Wednesday's practice, Art Stapleton of The Record reports.
ANALYSIS
McClain was sidelined for nine contests spanning the 2012 and 2013 seasons due to a spinal cord contusion. Diagnosed with spinal stenosis during that stretch, the fear always existed that another injury could afflict his playing career. There's no indication that the current concern is of that order of magnitude, but the Giants' LB depth may have taken a hit early in training camp.

Reserve middle linebacker, could see plenty of action if/when Jon Beason gets hurt.
McClain is a decent run-stopper, although he was mostly limited to two-down work last season with the Ravens, often being replaced by pass-rusher Elvis Dumervil on passing downs. However, McClain joined a Giants team in desperate need of linebacking help, and he could very well be a three-down player this season. After topping out at 82 tackles back in the 2011 season, McClain should see a high enough snap count this season that he could flirt with triple-digit tackles.
McClain suffered a season-ending spinal cord contusion last season and will open 2013 on the PUP list. He may end up missing the entire season but could compete for playing time at middle linebacker if he gets healthy.
McClain is slated to start at inside linebacker for the third year in a row. He spends a lot of his time on the field occupying blockers and filling gaps so that Ray Lewis can get to the ball carrier. McClain is generally subbed out in favor Brendan Ayanbadejo on passing downs.
McClain won the battle at inside linebacker last season, and is expected to hang on to the starting spot this year. He recorded 71 tackles last season, and it should be a reasonable expectation that he match or exceed that total, especially if Ray Lewis looks slower.
McClain competed last season with Tavares Gooden for the starting inside linebacker spot next to Ray Lewis, and should see some playing time as a backup. He has little value as an IDP option, however.
Will Compete with Tavares Gooden for a starting spot at inside linebacker.
