Richardson (neck) has been cleared for on-field, non-contact workouts, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports.
ANALYSIS
The 2015 season came to an abrupt close for Richardson, who sustained the second herniated disc of his career and subsequently underwent cervical spinal fusion. Receiving clearance to work on the field -- sans contact, of course -- is an encouraging sign in the special teamer's quest to return to the NFL. However, his former employer, the Packers, has been stingy in the past with players having neck concerns -- see Jermichael Finley and Nick Collins -- so it's unclear if Richardson will ever achieve his ultimate goal.

The Packers matched the Raiders' offer sheet to Richardson in the offseason, bringing him back to Green Bay for another season. He is not likely to see much playing time in the defensive backfield but will be a key part of the team's coverage units.
Richardson recorded 13 tackles (10 solo) in 2013, producing mostly on special teams. The team used Morgan Burnett and Micah Hyde at safety through most of last season, and the addition of Ha Ha Clinton-Dix in the draft further solidifies the position. Richardson will likely serve in a similar role to last season, and won't provide much IDP value unless there are injuries.
If he is cleared to play, Richardson will battle for a reserve safety roster spot in training camp.

Richardson (neck) intends to continue his NFL career, Tom Silverstein of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports. "Why quit if I'm healthy?" he said this week. "My thing is I still have love for the game, I still want to play and I feel healthy. I told my family if my neck gives me problems, I was going to hang it up. But if I felt normal...then I'm going to give it a shot."
