Gross has decided to retire from the National Football League, the Charlotte Observer reports.

Gross hangs up his cleats after an impressive 11 professional seasons in which he played in one Super Bowl and three Pro Bowls. The eighth overall pick in 2003, Gross spent his entire career with the Panthers, setting a team record with 167 starts along the way. When considering fantasy implications, Carolina will now be in the market for a much-needed left tackle to protect quarterback Cam Newton's blind side.

Returning from a broken ankle he sustained in November 2011, Gross will be the starting left tackle this season.

A 2008 Pro Bowler, Gross was a lock at Carolina's left tackle position until a leg injury cut his season short last year. He will be a key figure in Carolina's running game in 2010 and, provided he stays healthy, should help Jonathan Stewart and DeAngelo Williams but up big numbers.
Gross earned an NFL Pro Bowl berth as the starting left tackle, a role that he figures maintain for the Panthers over the next several seasons.
Gross will anchor the left side of the Carolina offensive line as the starting left tackle. He'll protect Jake Delhomme's blind side, at least until Jeff Otah is ready to make the move over from right tackle.
