The Ravens waived Vaughan on Monday, Jamison Hensley of ESPN.com reports.

ANALYSIS
After a rough showing in the Ravens' preseason opener last week, Vaughan fell behind Josh Woodrum on the depth chart and will now be dropped from the roster entirely after the team signed veteran Thad Lewis to address its lack of experienced reserve options at quarterback. Given that teams still have plenty of time to reduce their training-camp rosters before the regular season arrives, Vaughan could still latch on with another organization, but even in a best-case scenario, he'll likely be viewed mainly as a candidate for the practice squad no matter where he lands.

Brought in as a camp arm, Vaughan profiles as a possible candidate for the Ravens' third quarterback spot provided that the team opts to carry that many signal callers on the final roster. His main opportunities to see the field will likely be in low leverage situations in preseason games. Even with Joe Flacco out for the early portion of camp, the Ravens are unlikely to feel pressed to give Vaughan first-team reps alongside Ryan Mallett.

The Steelers are Vaughan’s third team since joining the league in 2014, but he has yet to play a single snap. He will compete with Landry Jones for the opportunity to backup oft-injured Ben Roethlisberger this season.

Vaughan will challenge Brandon Weeden in training camp for the role of Tony Romo's primary backup after failing to get a snap last season despite spending the entire campaign on the 53-man roster

Division II superstar will likely have to begin his NFL career on the Cowboys' practice squad, but if he shows enough in training camp a more QB-hungry club could grab him for a bench spot. Vaughan has the arm and smarts to become an NFL-caliber pocket passer if he's able to make the necessary adjustments, but the development process likely won't be a quick one.
