Sterling (concussion) was placed on injured reserve Saturday, Eric Allen and Ethan Greenberg of the Jets' official site report.
ANALYSIS
Sterling suffered his second concussion of the season in the Week 8 loss to the Bears and was on track to miss his second straight game Sunday against the Bills. With the tight end apparently not making much progress through the NFL's five-step concussion protocol, the Jets have opted to shut him down for the season. Sterling's absence for the final seven games should clear the way for Chris Herndon and Jordan Leggett to handle the majority of the snaps at tight end.

Jacksonville has struggled to find consistent production at tight end in recent years, and Sterling was one of five players who saw action at the position last season. The departure of free agent bust Julius Thomas should free up snaps, though Sterling will have to compete with a number of other journeyman -- Ben Koyack, Alex Ellis, Caleb Bluiett -- for a spot on the roster behind veterans Marcedes Lewis and Mychal Rivera.
Sterling saw action in nine games last season, mostly as a special teams player. The 2015 seventh-round pick will attempt to crack the wide receiver depth chart in 2016, but he'll have trouble emerging as anything more than a fringe contributor given the team's considerable depth at the position.
The seventh-round pick out of FCS Monmouth College (NJ) has excellent size (6-4, 235) for the position, which makes him an intriguing candidate to make the final roster out of camp. However, Jacksonville’s receiving corps is stacked, especially on the outside, so if Sterling does make the team, he’s unlikely to see consistent playing time.
