Coyle was leaned on heavily in 2017, making 64 tackles in 16 games. The 49ers brought Malcolm Smith on board from Oakland, however, so Coyle will likely shift to middle linebacker and take a backseat to Reuben Foster, who is facing a two-game suspension to start the season. ANALYSIS Coyle was placed on injured reserve Wednesday, meaning the linebacker will miss at least six weeks while he works to recover. He could be a candidate to return as the season progresses, but San Francisco won't make a definitive choice in the near future.
Coyle made the team last season as an undrafted free agent. He played mostly special teams, and when Bobby Wagner went down with an injury, he started only two games before the Seahawks moved K.J. Wright to MLB. Coyle's in for the same this season -- special teams and little defense.
An undrafted free agent out of Montana, Croyle comes to camp with a shot at a backup middle linebacker job. It won't be easy to unseat Heath Farwell, the special teams captain the last two years and a good MLB in his own right.
