2024 Fantasy Outlook
Hjelle was jettisoned back-and-forth between Triple-A Sacramento and the Giants multiple times last season. He was unsuccessful in both spots, collecting a 6.52 ERA in 15 relief appearances with the big club and a 6.00 ERA in 22 outings (19 starts) with Sacramento. All 23 of the 6-foot-11 right-hander's appearances in the majors have come in relief, and while the run prevention hasn't been there, he has struck out 59 in 54 innings. At this point, if Hjelle is going to have a prominent gig with San Francisco it seems likely to be in relief, perhaps in a multi-inning role. It's not a job that figures to bear fantasy fruit. Takes loss Wednesday
Hjelle (0-1) took the loss versus the Mets on Wednesday, allowing three runs on two hits and a walk while striking out two over 2.2 innings.
ANALYSIS
Blake Snell (thigh) was placed on the injured list Wednesday, forcing the Giants to go with a bullpen game. Hjelle ended up with the most innings of the seven pitchers used, but he was unable to match his success from his season debut Sunday versus the Diamondbacks, when he pitched two innings of one-hit ball. The right-hander was on the shelf with an elbow injury to begin the season, and he'll likely serve as a long reliever for the majority of 2024.

Many of the job battles in the NL West involve Rockies pitchers you want no part of, but whoever wins the Padres' closer role could return plenty of fantasy value.
Brad Johnson helps get ready for draft day by analyzing pitching staffs, and this week he focuses on the National League West, and in Los Angeles, Walker Buehler will start the season on the IL.

Gunning for roster spot
Hjelle's offseason work is translating to a strong spring thus far, writes Susan Slusser of the San Fransisco Chronicle.
ANALYSIS
Hjelle, standing at a hulking 6-foot-11, added 15 pounds of muscle heading into the season. He's looked sharp across four spring-training appearances, logging a win in his only start and allowing just two runs over 12 total innings. He could profile as an intriguing hybrid arm for the Giants.

2020
The first topic of conversation regarding Hjelle is always going to be his height. Standing a towering 6-foot-11, Hjelle tied Jon Rauch as the tallest-ever major leaguer when he debuted in 2022. Usually operating as a bulk reliever, Hjelle posted a 5.76 ERA but also a 28:8 K:BB over 25 innings during his first taste of the big leagues. He also had a 59 percent ground ball rate, which backed up his tendencies from the minors. Hjelle could be a solid back-end starter if given the opportunity, but he looks to be pretty far down the Giants' rotation depth chart and is more floor than ceiling.
