Retired race car driver Trickle, 71, died Thursday from an apparent self inflicted gun shot wound, according to the Lincoln County Sheriff's Office,

The popular former NASCAR driver was found dead at Forest Lawn Cemetary in Boger City, NC Thursday. The Lincoln County 911 call center apparently received a call from Trickle prior to his death. He told them they would discover his body there and he hung up. Trickle was a veteran of over 300 starts in 24 seasons of the Sprint Cup Series. He had two victories and 42 Top-10 finishes in 158 Nationwide Series starts. The popular driver was practically a cult hero with fans and the media alike.
