After suffering serious injuries in a car accident in July 2003, Girard officially retired on Wednesday, ending a valiant attempt at a comeback.
ANALYSIS
"We were hoping that Jonathan would be successful in his comeback attempt, but his doctors have advised him that he is not physically able to compete at the level of professional hockey," general manager Mike O'Connell said. "The hard work and determination that he has shown over the past two seasons gearing toward training camp this year was truly an inspiration to all of us associated with the team." This is an unfortunate end to a young career, and we wish Girard the best in all his future endeavors.

Lucky to be alive let alone back on skates, Girard returns to the NHL after missing two years recovering from a broken pelvis and broken neck received in a car collision in the summer of 2003. It remains to be seen if this smooth and agile skater with strong offensive instincts can be the same player he promised to be before the accident. He'll be slow to re-adjust to NHL play, but he's the kind of guy who could be a decent sleeper this season. Keep an eye on him in training camp -- you may want to take a late-round flyer on him.
