2025 Fantasy Outlook
After Ronald Acuna established the 40-50, 40-60 and 40-70 clubs in 2023, Ohtani created a new exclusive club of his own in 2024, becoming the first player in major-league history to reach 50 homers and 50 steals in a season. It will go down as one of the greatest fantasy campaigns of all time, and the fact that he was coming off September 2023 Tommy John surgery makes it all the more impressive. His play was not affected by a gambling scandal involving his former interpreter, as Ohtani led the league or was in the 99th percentile in xwOBA, xBA, xSLG, average exit velocity, barrel rate and hard-hit rate, per Statcast. There is usually only one way for a player to go after a career year, and his return to pitching complicates things somewhat, but Ohtani is a once-in-a-lifetime talent and the unprecedented can be expected at this point. Even as a UT-only player coming off a torn labrum in his left shoulder suffered during the World Series that will delay his return to the mound a bit, Ohtani will likely be the first player off the board in many leagues in 2025. Live bullpen pushed back to Sunday
The bullpen session against live hitters that Ohtani (elbow) was originally scheduled to throw pregame Saturday will instead take place Sunday, Jorge Castillo of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
The mound session will be a major step in Ohtani's journey to return to game action as a pitcher, as it will mark the first time he has faced hitters since he underwent Tommy John surgery in September 2023. Per Jack Harris of the Los Angeles Times, the reason for the session moving from Saturday to Sunday is the late ending of Friday's game against the Mets, which included a 98-minute rain delay and went 13 innings, finishing just before 1:00 am ET. Ohtani went 1-for-5 with a walk and a run in the Dodgers' victory.

Ohtani's improbable 2023 season was sad on many fronts. Despite a second 40-20 season in three years along with his pitching prowess, he was not afforded the chance to play October baseball with his team breaking down as well as his right elbow for a second time in five years. Ohtani ended up having his elbow surgery in late September which rules him out for pitching in 2024. If he were to follow the Bryce Harper recovery timeline from a similar procedure, there is a decent chance Ohtani could still be ready for Opening Day. That said, it would be unfair to expect even this unique player to be 100% himself given what we just saw from Harper this past season as he attempted to regain his power stroke. Ohtani signed a unique 10-year pact with the Dodgers, guaranteeing himself an excellent home park for lefty power and superb teammates at the top of the lineup.

Latest Fantasy Rumors

Won't pitch any time soon
Ohtani isn't expected to pitch in the big leagues until the second half of the season in a best-case scenario, according to Bill Plunkett of The Orange County Register.
ANALYSIS
Ohtani threw 50 pitches during his most recent bullpen session, the most he's thrown during his recovery from Tommy John surgery, though it's worth noting that he's yet to face live batters or toss breaking pitches. He seems to be trending in the right direction, but the two-way phenom isn't close to pitching at the big-league level, though he still carries plenty of fantasy value as an elite DH.
