Being let go by Panthers
The Panthers are set to release Clowney, Jeremy Fowler of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Per Mike Kaye of The Charlotte Observer, the move will free up $7.78 million in salary cap space for the Panthers. In 14 games with Carolina in 2024, Clowney recorded 46 tackles to go along with 5.5 sacks. The 32-year-old -- who was the top overall pick in the 2014 NFL Draft -- will now look to catch on with a team seeking to add experienced pass-rushing depth.

Clowney is one of two key pass rushers that the Panthers added this offseason after trading star outside linebacker Brian Burnes to the Giants. The South Carolina native agreed to a two-year deal worth up to $24 million after posting 43 tackles, including 9.5 sacks, two forced fumbles and five passes defended with the Ravens last season. Clowney is expected to start opposite D.J. Wonnum at OLB, and the former again has a chance to shine as a top pass rusher in this league in 2024.

Latest Fantasy Rumors
No intention of retiring
Clowney intends to play in 2025 after being released by the Panthers last week, Joe Person of the Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
The 32-year-old edge rusher has become a journeyman since his Houston days, playing for five different teams over the last six seasons, and he's on the move again. Clowney believes he still has plenty to offer a defense after recording 14.0 sacks in 31 regular-season games over the last two seasons between the Ravens and Panthers, however. "I'm definitely gonna play well. You can mark my word on that. I don't care where I end up playing at, I'm gonna play extremely well," Clowney said last Thursday prior to his release becoming official. "It is what it is. I can play the game. I can play football. There are 31 other teams. I just hope another team gives me that opportunity so I can prove myself again. I feel like I can do that." Carolina general manager Dan Morgan made attempts to trade Clowney both before and after the 2025 Draft with no takers, and the veteran declined to take a pay cut to remain with the team.
