Second win in five weeks
Costa defeated Christian Rodriguez via unanimous decision (29-28, 29-28, 29-28) at UFC Fight Night on Saturday in Mexico City.
ANALYSIS
The visuals weren't great at times, particularly late, but all three judges felt Costa did enough to win. It didn't come easy. Mel closed with a 159-77 edge in total strikes landed, but just a 65-64 edge in those deemed "significant." He also allowed six takedowns and gave up 6:48 worth of control time. In other words, he's lucky the end result wasn't a whole lot closer. The 28-year-old Brazilian has quietly won three in a row dating back to June 2024, with the previous two coming via submission.

Quick turnaround in Mexico
Costa will take on Christian Rodriguez in a featherweight matchup at UFC Mexico on March 29, Marcel Dorff of Eurosport.nl reports.
ANALYSIS
Costa has won three of his last four, most recently submitting Andre Fili in the first round in February, which opened the door for this quick turnaround. He now takes on Rodriguez, who has won five of his last six, most recently taking a decision from a highly-regarded prospect in Austin Bashi this past January. Costa has the slight edge in offensive and defensive striking marks, while Rodriguez is a higher-volume wrestler with superior takedown defense as well.

Second straight submission win
Costa defeated Andre Fili via submission (guillotine choke) at 4:30 of Round 1 at UFC Fight Night on Saturday in Seattle.
ANALYSIS
Costa had a 27-7 lead in terms of significant strikes landed at the time of the stoppage, but the bout felt a whole lot closer than that. He and Fili fought to even terms, at which point Fili landed an easy takedown and left his neck exposed in the process. Costa wasted zero time in clamping on the guillotine choke which closed the show. The Brazilian has victories in three of his last four fights, including back-to-back submission wins on his resume. The lone loss during that stretch came against a quality opponent in Steve Garcia.

Fighting Fili at UFC Seattle
Costa will fight Andre Fili at UFC Seattle on Feb. 22, Nolan King of USA Today reports.
ANALYSIS
Costa fought just once in 2024, emerging victorious over Shayilan Nuerdanbieke in June. Costa now sits at 2-2 in the UFC but will be tasked with taking down a far more experienced fighter in Fili, who also owns a three-inch reach advantage over the 28-year-old.
