Personal Bio/PreCareer Summary
Miles Byrd's rise into stardom in the college ranks didn't happen overnight, but there's no question his uptick in performance was surprising. The 6-foot-7 guard was limited to four appearances off the bench in his freshman year with San Diego State, but he showed some promise after averaging 4.3 points per game in 10.0 minutes per game. His minutes increased to 14.1 per game as a sophomore, and while he appeared in 34 games off the bench, he averaged 4.0 points per game. However, he embraced a starting role in his junior year and took the Mountain West Conference by storm. Byrd averaged 12.3 points, 4.4 rebounds, 2.7 assists, 2.1 steals and 1.1 blocks per game while starting in each of his 30 appearances as a junior in 2024-25. He decided to keep his name in the 2025 NBA Draft after having the best year of his career in the college ranks. Byrd's massive leap in his senior year was more noticeable on defense from a statistical perspective. Still, he remains a capable player on offense even if he has areas to improve, such as his shooting efficiency and handles. His biggest strengths right now are his defending and passing, although as a passer with flair, he needs to improve his reads and decision-making at the highest level. His calling card right now lies on the defensive end, as he has the potential to be an elite stopper and owns above-average instincts, so he can turn defense into offense with ease. With his active hands and long arms, it can be challenging to dribble near him, as evidenced by his incredible 2.1 steals and 1.1 blocks per game. Byrd can get the job done on both ends of the court and doesn't appear to have any glaring weaknesses in this game. While he's a good athlete, he stands out more due to his above-average instincts than his physical attributes, and it seems his defensive ability is more advanced than his scoring capacity. He figures to be a late first-round or early second-round pick in the 2025 NBA Draft. A player like Matisse Thybulle would be a good comparison for what his NBA career might look like.
