The 29-year-old was on Triple-A Toledo's disabled list earlier in the year with shoulder problems, and appeared in just seven games (five starts) for the club this season. In 23.2 innings on the year, Ni has posted a 4.56 ERA and 14 strikeouts. From 2009-10, Ni threw 54 innings out of the bullpen for the Tigers, and posted a 4.33 ERA with 43 strikeouts. Detroit has ended its four-year business relationship with the left-hander, but Ni may find a team willing to bring him in for minor league bullpen depth.

Ni started the 2009 season with Triple-A Toledo, but he was impressive enough after 24 minor league appearances to receive a promotion to the big leagues in late June. The 27-year-old lefty had continued success after his promotion, finishing with a 2.61 ERA and 21 strikeouts in 31 innings for the Tigers. He uses a fastball that can reach 91 mph while mixing in a decent curveball and changup. Even though Ni spent time as a starter in Taiwan, the Tigers seem content to keep him in his current role as a lefty specialist out of the bullpen.
