In a perfect world, Hardaway will be able to fill the role that Eddie Jones handled last season as a veteran swingman off the bench. Still, despite reports that he's dropped 22 pounds and that he's pain-free after having a bone spur removed from his knee more than a year ago, he's nothing more than a late-round dart in deep leagues at this stage of his career.
Remember when he had his own series of sneaker commercials? And was featured in movies? Seems like a really long time ago, huh? Injuries have made Hardaway a shadow of his former all-NBA self. He still has a great deal of skill and size for a guard, but none of his former explosiveness. His contract expires after this season, which makes him a valuable trading chip. He’s unlikely to finish the season in New York.
Hardaway should be primarily a bench player unless injuries occur at shooting guard or small forward. He can still do a little bit of everything, but will not get enough minutes to be an elite contributor. The guard rotation will be crowded, unless Allan Houston's knee becomes a problem, so look for Hardaway to see time at small forward backing up Tim Thomas. At 25 minutes a night, he’ll have some value in deep leagues.
Hardaway has been limited by injuries over his last few seasons and 2002 was no different (missed 24 games with a right thumb injury). Hardaway has competition for the starting shooting guard position in Joe Johnson and needs to be a consistent scoring threat in order to hold onto his job.
