Williams was dropped from the Pelicans' 15-man roster Tuesday and has joined the D-League's Oklahoma City Blue, Erik Horne of The Oklahoman reports.
ANALYSIS
With the Pelicans electing to sign Wayne Selden to a 10-day contract, it was only a matter of time before Williams was let go, as his contract was only partially guaranteed for the rest of the season. He saw action in six games over two separate stints with the Pelicans, averaging 4.5 points across 13.2 minutes per contest. WIlliams will bide his time in the D-League while he awaits his next NBA opportunity.

As a six-year veteran, the 28-year-old Williams provided depth at small forward, which might be the only position the Spurs are not exceptionally deep at. Last season, he saw action in 20 games, where he averaged 1.9 points, 0.9 rebounds, 0.5 assists, and 0.1 steals in five minutes per contest. Though his production was modest, the Spurs needed some added depth at the wing with Kyle Anderson being a rookie and Kawhi Leonard suffering from nagging injuries in 2014-15. With the Spurs being one of the deepest teams in the league, it is unlikely that Williams will provide increased minutes from what he saw last season. However, with coach Gregg Popovich's tendency to rest his veteran starters during the regular season, it is possible that Williams could see spot minutes off the bench in support of players who are higher up on the depth chart.
Williams signed a one-year contract with the Heat In the offseason and will now spend his sixth season in the NBA residing in South Beach. He only managed to play in three games last season for the Thunder and doesn't stand much of a chance to see time on the court in a Heat uniform either. Over the course of those three games, the 27-year-old averaged 3.7 points, 0.3 assists, and 0.3 steals in six minutes per game. Sometimes a fresh start in a new city does wonders for a player's career, but that shouldn't be the case for the former Virginia Military Institute standout as he's third in the pecking order at shooting guard behind Dwyane Wade and Danny Granger. Of course those two players have proven over the past few seasons that they're prone to injury, so there's a small window of opportunity available for Williams to back his way into a spot in the rotation. Even so, there's not much evidence over the course of Williams' career that would suggest he'd thrive if given the opportunity anyway.
The Warriors let Williams go to make space for a run at restricted free agent DeAndre Jordan, and the Bobcats quickly signed him to a two-year, $5 million contract. He’ll give Charlotte a much-needed long-range shooting threat, but he’ll miss the first 6-8 weeks of the 2011-12 season due to a knee injury.
Add one part fringe NBA-er, one part league-leading team pace, and a pinch of Don Nelson's generally unpredictable behavior: that's the recipe for Williams' success last year. On a per-game basis, Williams was a fantastic value, profiling as a late-fifth or early-sixth round pick, largely on the strength of 15.2 points and 1.4 threes per game, plus a shooting percentage (49.5) on the high side for a wingman. Of course, that's only 24-games worth of data. Williams actually began the season with the D-League's Sioux Falls team. In 31 games there, he averaged 26.4 points and 1.8 threes on an even more impressive 57.6 percent shooting. Williams didn't make his season debut until March 2nd, but played an integral role for the team thenceforward, averaging 32.5 minutes per contest. On a team with a healthy Stephen Curry, Monta Ellis, and David Lee, Williams is very much the fourth scoring option. Of course, on a team that averaged over 100 possessions per game, that's definitely something.
