Bess, whose real name is Johnny but was nicknamed Cuba by his father, is a power-hitting first baseman who played four seasons at Grand Canyon University. He battled through knee and hamstring injuries but put forth his best season for the Antelopes in 2019, when the 6-foot-2 Bess hit .341/.476/.632 with 11 home runs and 40 RBI while walking more (42) than he struck out (41) over 233 plate appearances.
