The Hawks
announced Wednesday that Bufkin will undergo season-ending surgery Jan. 7 to address right shoulder instability.
ANALYSIS
Though Bufkin is expected to make a full recovery in advance of the 2025-26 season, the missed development time could prove costly to the 21-year-old guard, who has made just 27 appearances for the Hawks since being selected with the No. 15 overall pick in the 2023 NBA Draft. He missed significant time in his rookie season due to a fractured thumb as a well as a big toe sprain, then suffered a right shoulder subluxation in June that kept him from playing in the Las Vegas Summer League. Bufkin then aggravated the shoulder injury in October, and after struggling over his 10 appearances upon returning to action Nov. 18, the Hawks opted to shut him down earlier this month before it was determined that surgery was necessary.
