Depth TE.
Bergen surprised many observers by winning a spot on the Cardinals' roster last season. Even more surprisingly, he earned enough playing time to reel in 28 catches and a touchdown. His 9.6 yards per catch were quite respectable. In the final four games of the 2005 season, Bergen averaged 3.5 receptions per game. He is capable of serving as a fine fantasy backup, or even as a starter in deeper leagues, except for playing time concerns. The Cardinals are expecting a lot out of third-round draft pick Leonard Pope at tight end, and like Eric Edwards as a blocking tight end. The Cardinals also have a pair of top-flight wide receivers in Anquan Boldin and Larry Fitzgerald. While Arizona plans to use more two tight end sets this season, there might not be enough balls to go around for Bergen to be a valuable fantasy commodity. 9/3 Update: Bergen will begin the regular season as the Cards' backup to Pope at tight end. He probably won't see enough action to be a fantasy factor except in the deepest leagues.
Bergen is a rookie competing a roster spot. Although he has not climbed high on the depth chart, the inexperience and injuries to the other Arizona tight ends could provide an opportunity for Bergen to see game action. Still, he doesn't figure to be a major contributor this season.
