Bruener is not a pass-receiving threat, but will be on the field for plenty of snaps because of his blocking ability.
Bruener is more like a sixth offensive lineman than a component in the receiving game. Even more so now with the emergence of Owen Daniels has Houston's primary pass-catching threat at the position.
Bruener is one of the league's best blocking tight ends and will continue in that role for Houston in 2007. While the Texans will try to bring quarterback David Carr to the next level this season, it will still be primarily a running team and that means Bruener will be on the field a lot. In passing situations, Bruener will be replaced by Jeb Putzier.
Bruener became Houston's starting tight end last season, surpassing Billy Miller on the depth chart. He will continue in that role in 2005, mainly because he's the better the blocker of the two and that's needed as the Texans become a rush-first offense. Bruener will not be receiving threat.
Bruener's role with Houston will be to block for Domanick Davis and protect David Carr. If the Texans want to throw to their tight end, Billy Miller or Bennie Joppru will be the target.
Bruener took a massive cut in pay to stay on the Steelers. He’ll have to beat out newcomer Jay Riemersma to win the starting job. Even if he does, he doesn’t merit fantasy consideration after putting up a whopping 13 receptions for 66 yards and one touchdown last year in 10 games.
