2025 Fantasy Outlook
Matthews generated 33 goals, 78 points, 261 shots on net and 89 blocked shots across 67 regular-season appearances in 2024-25. It was a down campaign for the 27-year-old center after he reached new heights offensively in 2023-24 while generating a league-high 69 goals and 107 points in 82 outings. He dealt with an upper-body injury for most of 2024-25, which kept him out of nine straight games in November and six consecutive contests from late December through early January. However, he wrapped up the regular season with 22 goals and 55 points in his final 43 appearances. His 89 blocks ranked fourth among forwards, and he posted a career-best 56.8 winning percentage on 1,223 faceoffs. Matthews has plenty of bounce-back appeal if he can stay healthy. It wouldn’t be surprising if he finished at or near the top of the league in goals and shots in 2025-26. Read Past Outlooks

Eight shots, one assist in loss
Matthews picked up an assist in Monday's 3-2 loss to Detroit.
ANALYSIS
Matthews has had a quiet start to the season -- he has a goal and assist in three games. But he wired eight shots at Cam Talbot on Monday night, and he now has 15 in those three contests. Matthews' shooting percentage is a low 6.7 percent, so it's only a matter of time before the goals come as his rate gets closer to his career mark of 15.8.

Matthews is the best goal scorer in the league today, full stop. He finished the 2023-24 campaign with 69 markers, which is the most in a single season since 1995-96. He is the only player to record multiple 60-goal seasons since the league introduced the salary cap in 2005-06. That said, there are some drawbacks when picking the 26-year-old forward. For starters, a lot of his goals come on even strength -- 51 of 69 in 2023-24. He still provides value in leagues that count power-play goals or power-play points, but not quite as much as you might assume from a player of his caliber. Additionally, he's a bit of an injury risk. Matthews played in 81 of 82 outings last year, but that was the first time since his rookie season that he appeared in at least 75 games. He also isn't special in terms of assists, so even in a season where he recorded 69 goals, he finished just outside the top five in scoring with 107 points. Even with all those caveats, Matthews is a tremendous luxury to have on any fantasy team.

Latest Fantasy Rumors

Looks fully healthy
Matthews feels fully healthy heading into the 2025-26 season, David Alter of The Hockey News reports Friday.
ANALYSIS
Matthews battled a lingering injury throughout 2024-25, leading to a 33-goal, 78-point season over 67 regular-season games, which was his worst full-length campaign since 2018-19. The 28-year-old came out of battle drills Friday feeling good, telling reporters, "I'm super happy with how I feel and just how the first two days have gone. I mean, that's all you can ask for, and you never really know until you get back out there. You can do everything in the summer and train and skate and do all this stuff, but once you get back into this kind of feeling, you want to respond and feel really good, and I definitely have." Health and confidence are two good signs for Matthews' outlook this season, though he'll still have to adjust to life without Mitch Marner, which could lead to some early growing pains for the Maple Leafs' offense early in 2025-26.
