Lander signed a contract with Ak Bars of the KHL on Thursday, TSN reports.
ANALYSIS
After spending much of the 2016-17 season between Edmonton's NHL and AHL teams, Lander has decided to take his talents to Russia, where he will likely be able to receive more ice time. Since his 20-point season in 2014-15, the 26-year-old has managed just two goals and five assists in 83 total NHL games. He'll focus on his game in Europe, and perhaps we'll see him back in North America in due time.

Evan Berofsky includes the Oilers' Anton Lander among lesser-known names on depth lines and in the AHL who could pay fantasy dividends in 2016, if only they get the opportunity.

Lander impressed despite a limited role last year, tallying 20 points in 38 games, including an end-of-season run in which he racked up seven assists in a seven-game span. However, he's constantly ridden the shuttle between AHL Oklahoma City and Edmonton over the past few seasons, and unless the Oilers like him in a fourth-line role, this year doesn't look like it'll be any different. Edmonton is loaded at center with Ryan-Nugent Hopkins, Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl. Particularly if Draisaitl makes the team out of training camp, the Oilers may feel that Lander is best served playing top-line minutes in the AHL rather than fourth-line minutes in the NHL.
Lander has spent the past three season in relative limbo -- he gets called up when the team needs a warm body because of injury, but never performs well enough to remain on the team for very long. He has only scored two goals and six assists in 95 games for the club and is the definition of a fourth-line forward. But the gaping hole at center could mean he can finally get an apartment in Edmonton. The fourth line beckons, but his production there won't be fantasy worthy.
Lander was given a chance with the Oilers last season, playing in 56 games, but failed to impress with only two goals and six points. Expect him to start in the AHL, but he'll get another chance when injury hits.
Lander had his best season to date with Timra of the Swedish Elite League last year, but still only scored 11 goals in 49 games. The Oilers would like him to play in North America this season so he can get acclimated to the AHL, and one step closer to NHL action.
