According to media reports in Finland, Numminen has made the decision to retire after 20 seasons in the NHL, the league's official site reports.
ANALYSIS
The 29th pick of the 1986 Entry Draft enjoyed a lengthy career playing 1,372 regular season games with such teams as Winnipeg, Phoenix, Dallas and Buffalo. After recovering from heart surgery during the 2007-08 season, the 41-year-old veteran defenseman saw a decrease in playing time as a healthy scratch. Numminen ends his career with 117 goals, 520 assists and a plus-56 rating.

The Sabres re-signed Numminen for 2008-09 despite the fact that he is 40 years old and missed 81 games last season because of a heart defect. Numminen is a defense-first player that shouldn't total more than 20-to-25 points. He accumulated a plus-17 rating in 2006-07, but the Sabres were the best team in the NHL that season. A weaker supporting cast should lower Numminen's plus/minus rating much closer to the break-even mark this season.
Numminen is a 39-year-old defensive-minded player. He isn't likely to exceed last season's 29 points (2G, 27A) and his plus/minus rating (plus-17 a year ago) will probably decline along with the Sabres' record.
The Finnish defenseman is starting to get up there in years, but still had 40 points in 75 games last season. He had a little bit of injury trouble in the postseason, but should be good to go for the 2006-07 season. Expect around 40 points from him this season.
Consider Numminen, a 16-year NHL vet, an older but potentially capable replacement for the recently departed Alexei Zhitnik. Numminen has 111 goals and 551 points in 1,160 career games. He's on a downward trend in his roto life cycle mostly due to age (he's 37), but the Sabres seem to have big enough plans for him that he can go 10-20-30 if all things click.
