Megna was given all the opportunities to prove he can be a reliable and capable NHL winger but flamed out in two years with Vancouver and signed a one-year, two-way contract with Washington. Megna is a depth forward who may get a few games with the Capitals if injuries occur, but he was signed for depth and to help keep AHL Hershey competitive. He's scored 126 points in 241 career AHL games and just 20 points in 113 NHL games, including just one appearance for the Canucks during the 2017-18 season.
Late of the Penguins, Megna was a depth forward signing for an organization desperately hoping to cash in on a low-risk late bloomer. Although Megna had his best offensive season as a professional (26 goals, 39 points in 63 games) with AHL Wilkes-Barre/Scranton last season, he barely earned a cup of coffee with Pittsburgh, and subsequently expressed interest in joining a new organization this summer. While it's plausible Megna could earn a spot on Broadway out of training camp, he's very likely to start the season with AHL Hartford.
Megna is a forward prospect with good speed who was probably under-utilized by former coach Dan Bylsma. The 24-year-old scored five goals and nine points in 36 games for the Pens while adding 15 points (9G, 6A) in 25 AHL contests. He has the potential to serve as a third-line winger and the changing of regimes in Pittsburgh can only help the undrafted Florida native. He scored 30 goals in the USHL back in 2010-11, but from a fantasy perspective, there's little reason to run out and draft Megna.
Megna has some offensive potential, but at 23 years of age he is already on the older side. He scored 30 goals in the USHL a couple seasons ago and totaled 31 points in 38 games for the University of Nebraska-Omaha last year. He then made his professional debut with the Baby Pens, but the numbers just weren't there. Megna potted five goals and 12 points in 56 AHL games as a rookie. If his sophomore campaign with Wilkes-Barre goes well, then he could put himself on the radar map. As of now, there's little reason to roster the forward.
