Drops split decision in Moscow
Light HeavyweightUFC
November 9, 2019
Abreu lost to Shamil Gamzatov via split decision (28-29, 29-28, 28-29) at UFC Fight Night on Saturday in Moscow, Russia.
ANALYSIS
It was one of the rare fights that was so close that it's too difficult to get worked up about the result either way. Abreu's biggest issue was that he was the less active of the two men. He attempted just 95 total strikes compared to 158 from Gamzatov. While he did land the only successful takedown of the bout, that simply wasn't enough in a fight that was primarily spent on the feet. Abreu was effective enough in Rounds 1 and 2 that he has a real claim for a 29-28 win, but going to the scorecards against a native Russian in his home country is a recipe for disaster and Abreu paid the price. The Brazilian has now alternated wins and losses in his first three UFC bouts.
Third UFC fight in works
Light HeavyweightUFC
August 23, 2019
Abreu has a light heavyweight fight in the works against Shamil Gamzatov for UFC Moscow on November 9, Nolan King of MMAJunkie.com reports.
ANALYSIS
After dropping his UFC debut in February, Abreu came back strong in his second go when he defeated Sam Alvey via unanimous decision at UFC on ESPN 4 in July. Now, Abreu will surely have his hands full come November, as while Gamzatov will be making his own UFC debut, he boasts a 13-0 professional record.
Picks up first UFC win
Light HeavyweightUFC
July 20, 2019
Abreu defeated Sam Alvey via unanimous decision (30-27, 30-27, 29-28) at UFC San Antonio on Saturday.
ANALYSIS
Not much of note happened for the first four minutes, as Abreu carefully selected his shots in an effort to avoid the counter striking of Alvey. Abreu tried multiple times to execute a takedown up against the cage, but was ultimately unsuccessful. The two finally got going with a flurry in the round's closing seconds, and Abreu got the better of the exchange (even if he did land a late knee at the bell). Abreu landed with kicks early in the second round and eventually recorded a takedown, but Alvey reversed position while Abreu was looking to secure a a choke. He was unable to take advantage, and the round finished with both men on the feet. Abreu took some heavy shots early in the third, but started to get momentum back with a damaging combination in the final minute. In the end, Abreu did just enough to pick up his first UFC victory, though it was a lackluster showing from both men.
Second UFC bout on tap
Light HeavyweightUFC
May 17, 2019
Abreu will take on Sam Alvey in a light heavyweight matchup at UFC San Antonio on July 20, Alexander K. Lee of MMAFighting.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Abreu missed weight for his UFC debut by four pounds, and proceeded to lose a unanimous decision to Magomed Ankalaev while breaking his nose in the process. He'll get a chance to rebound this summer with a full fight camp, taking on a UFC veteran in Alvey that has lost back-to-back fights. It's a winnable fight for the 26-year-old prospect, but he'll need to increase his output after recording just 23 significant strikes over three rounds in his debut fight.
Has nose broken in tough loss
Light HeavyweightUFC
February 23, 2019
Abreu lost to Magomed Ankalaev via unanimous decision (27-30, 27-30 28-29) at UFC Fight Night 145 in Prague, Czech Republic on Saturday.
ANALYSIS
Abreu was having a bit of success playing the role of counter puncher but it was a sharp counter uppercut from Ankalaev that broke the Brazillian's nose late in Round 1. Abreu didn't seem to have much of a plan from there, as his opponent simply pressured and waited to draw out takedown attempts, which were all successfully thwarted. Abreu seems like a better kickboxer than we generally see from BJJ specialists, so it's worth seeing how he looks in a slightly more forgiving bout before passing judgment. He falls to 14-3 in professional MMA as a result of the loss.
